Geography of San Marino

San Marino covers only 61 km² (24 sq mi) on the edge of the Apennine foothills. Its landscape is dominated by Monte Titano, a limestone ridge with sheer cliffs on one side, which reaches 756 m (2,480 ft) at its highest point. The historic City of San Marino and its three medieval towers sit along the crest. Around the mountain the land falls away in rolling hills, farmland and woods toward the Italian border, and on clear days the summit offers views to the Adriatic coast near Rimini.

San Marino is landlocked and has no natural lakes, but small rivers such as the Ausa and the Marano flow through it toward the Adriatic, which lies only about 10 km (6 mi) beyond its eastern border. The climate is Mediterranean with continental influences: summers are warm, and winters can be cold enough for snow on Monte Titano. Outside the towns, much of the land is used for farming, vineyards and olive groves, and the steep slopes keep most building in the valleys and along the ridge.
