Geography of the Philippines
The Philippines is made up of more than 7,000 islands, grouped into three main areas: Luzon in the north, the Visayas in the center and Mindanao in the south. Luzon and Mindanao are by far the largest islands. Most islands are mountainous and volcanic, because the country lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Well-known volcanoes include the near-perfect cone of Mayon, Taal, which sits inside a lake south of Manila, and Mount Pinatubo, which erupted in 1991. The highest point is Mount Apo on Mindanao, at 2,954 m (9,692 ft).
Rivers are generally short, but the Cagayan River in northern Luzon is the longest, and Laguna de Bay next to Metro Manila is the largest lake. The islands have long, indented coastlines with bays, coral reefs and white sand beaches, and they are bordered by the Philippine Sea to the east, the South China Sea to the west and the Sulu and Celebes Seas to the south. The climate is tropical and humid, with a dry season and a rainy season, and typhoons strike often, especially in the north and east.
Fun facts
- Quezon City, not Manila, is the most populous city in the Philippines.
- The Chocolate Hills of Bohol are more than 1,000 grass-covered limestone mounds that turn brown in the dry season.
- The Philippine Trench, east of Mindanao, is one of the deepest places in the world's oceans.
Flag of the Philippines
The flag of the Philippines has two equal horizontal stripes, blue on top and red below, and a white equilateral triangle at the hoist. Inside the triangle is a golden yellow sun with eight main rays, and a yellow five-pointed star sits in each of the triangle's three corners.
