About Atlas of Maps

Atlas of Maps is a free atlas with maps of all 212 countries and territories of the world, their states and provinces, the continents and every national flag. It is made for students, teachers and anyone who needs a clear map to look up or print.

How the maps are made

Every map is drawn from open geographic data (Natural Earth and geoBoundaries) with a projection suited to each country: transverse Mercator for countries that stretch from north to south, a conformal conic projection for wide countries in the middle latitudes and Mercator near the equator. Labels are placed automatically so they do not overlap, then checked by hand. Capitals, population and area come from Wikidata.

Borders and disputed territories

Borders follow the United States worldview of Natural Earth, which matches the position of the United Nations in cases such as Crimea. The map of India follows the official boundaries of the Government of India. Pages about disputed territories (Western Sahara, the Falkland Islands, Palestine, Taiwan, Kosovo) describe the situation neutrally. A border on a map does not imply any position on the legal status of a territory.

Other languages

The same atlas is available in Spanish at Mapas del Mundo.
