Map of Asia with countries and capitals
Asia is the largest continent, stretching from the Mediterranean and Red seas in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east, and from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Indian Ocean in the south. The Ural Mountains, the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus separate it from Europe, and the Isthmus of Suez joins it to Africa. The map shows 48 countries plus Hong Kong and Macau.

Asia holds the highest mountains on Earth. The Himalayas, with Mount Everest at 8,849 m (29,032 ft) on the border of Nepal and China, curve along the southern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, and the Karakoram, Hindu Kush and Tian Shan ranges continue to the west. Great rivers such as the Yangtze, the Yellow River, the Ganges, the Indus and the Mekong flow from these highlands to fertile plains and deltas. The climate ranges from the monsoon lands of South and Southeast Asia to the deserts of Arabia and Central Asia, the cold steppes of Mongolia and the Arctic tundra of Siberia. The shores of the Dead Sea are the lowest land on Earth.
Asia is usually divided into East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Central Asia and Western Asia, which overlaps with the Middle East. China is the largest country counted here, at about 9.6 million km² (3.7 million sq mi), and Kazakhstan is the largest landlocked country in the world; the Maldives, at 298 km² (115 sq mi), is the smallest. China and India are by far the most populous countries. Siberia, the Asian part of Russia, covers the north of the continent, but this atlas counts Russia with Europe, Turkey with Asia and Cyprus with Europe. Hong Kong and Macau are special administrative regions of China. Taiwan and Palestine are shown separately, although their status is disputed.
