Map of the European Union with countries and capitals

The European Union is a political and economic union of European countries, not a geographic region. Its members stretch from Portugal and Ireland on the Atlantic Ocean to Finland, the Baltic states, Romania and Bulgaria in the east, and from north of the Arctic Circle to Malta and Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea. The map shows all 27 member countries.

Because the EU covers most of Europe outside Russia, it shares the continent's main landforms. The North European Plain runs through France, Germany and Poland, the Alps rise in France, Italy, Germany, Austria and Slovenia, and the Pyrenees divide Spain from France. The Carpathians curve through Slovakia, Poland and Romania. The Danube flows from Germany to the Black Sea, and the Rhine links the Alps with the North Sea. The climate is oceanic in the northwest, continental in the east and Mediterranean in the south, while northern Finland and Sweden have long, cold winters. EU countries have coasts on the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

France is the largest member at 643,801 km² (248,573 sq mi), a figure that includes its overseas regions, followed by Spain and Sweden, and Malta is the smallest at 316 km² (122 sq mi). Germany has the most people. Brussels, the capital of Belgium, is home to the main EU institutions; the European Parliament also meets in Strasbourg, and the EU's Court of Justice sits in Luxembourg. Several European countries are not members, including Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Ukraine and the United Kingdom, which left on January 31, 2020. Cyprus is a member even though it lies geographically in Asia, while Greenland and the Faroe Islands belong to Denmark but are outside the EU. Most members use the euro.
