Geography of Russia
The Ural Mountains, running from north to south, divide Russia into a European part in the west and Siberia in the east. West of the Urals lies the East European Plain, home to most Russians and to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. East of the Urals come the flat West Siberian Plain, the Central Siberian Plateau and the mountains of the Russian Far East, including the volcanoes of Kamchatka. Mountains also line the southern borders: the Caucasus, where Mount Elbrus rises to 5,642 m (18,510 ft), often counted as Europe's highest peak, and the Altai and Sayan ranges.
Russia has some of the world's longest rivers. The Volga, the longest river in Europe, flows into the Caspian Sea, while the Ob, Yenisei and Lena cross Siberia northward to the Arctic Ocean, and the Amur forms part of the border with China. Lake Baikal in southern Siberia is the deepest lake on Earth. The country has long coasts on the Arctic and Pacific Oceans and on the Baltic, Black and Caspian Seas. Natural zones run in broad bands, from Arctic tundra through the vast taiga forest to steppe in the south, and much of Siberia sits on permafrost.
Fun facts
- Russia spans 11 time zones, from Kaliningrad in the west to Kamchatka in the east.
- Lake Baikal holds roughly a fifth of the world's unfrozen surface fresh water.
- Kaliningrad, on the Baltic Sea between Poland and Lithuania, is cut off by land from the rest of Russia.
Flag of Russia
The flag of Russia has three equal horizontal stripes of white, blue and red, from top to bottom, with no emblem. The same white, blue and red stripes appear on the flags of Slovakia and Slovenia, which add a coat of arms, while Serbia uses the colors in reverse order.
