Geography of the Falkland Islands
The archipelago covers 12,200 km² (4,710 sq mi) and consists of two main islands, East Falkland and West Falkland, separated by the Falkland Sound, plus hundreds of smaller islands. The landscape is mostly rolling moorland and peat with rocky ridges, and there are almost no native trees. The highest point is Mount Usborne on East Falkland, at 705 m (2,313 ft). Stone runs, streams of boulders left by ice-age frost, cover some valley floors, and the coasts are deeply cut by inlets and sounds.
The climate is cool, windy and often cloudy, with small temperature differences between summer and winter and modest rainfall. The islands are an important breeding ground for seabirds and marine mammals, including several species of penguins, black-browed albatrosses, seals and sea lions. Sheep farming has long been the main land use outside Stanley, the capital and only town, where most of the roughly 4,550 residents (2018) live. The surrounding waters support a large squid fishery.
Fun facts
- Five species of penguins breed on the Falklands, including king, gentoo, rockhopper and Magellanic penguins.
- Charles Darwin visited the islands in 1833 and 1834 and described their unusual stone runs.
- Stanley is the only town on the islands; the rest of the population lives in small settlements known as Camp.
