Geography of Cyprus

Cyprus is the third-largest island in the Mediterranean, after Sicily and Sardinia, with an area of 9,242 km² (3,568 sq mi). Two mountain ranges frame the island. The Troodos Mountains cover much of the southwest and center and rise to Mount Olympus at 1,952 m (6,404 ft). Along the north coast runs the narrow Kyrenia Range, also called Pentadaktylos. Between them lies the Mesaoria, a broad central plain where Nicosia stands, and the Karpas Peninsula reaches northeast like a long finger.

Cyprus has a hot Mediterranean climate, with long, dry summers and mild, rainy winters, and snow falls on the Troodos peaks in winter. Rivers are short and many dry up in summer, so reservoirs store much of the water supply. Salt lakes lie near Larnaca and on the Akrotiri Peninsula near Limassol. Since 1974 the island has been divided, with a Turkish Cypriot administration recognized only by Turkey in the north and a UN buffer zone separating it from the south. The United Kingdom keeps two sovereign base areas on the island.
