Geography of East Timor
East Timor covers 14,919 km² (5,760 sq mi). Besides the eastern part of Timor, it includes the exclave of Oecusse on the island's northwest coast, surrounded on land by Indonesian West Timor, as well as Atauro Island north of Dili and the small island of Jaco off the eastern tip. The interior is steep and mountainous: the Ramelau range runs along the center of the island, and its peak, Tatamailau (Mount Ramelau), reaches 2,963 m (9,721 ft). Coastal plains are narrow, especially along the north coast.
Rivers are short and steep, and many shrink to dry beds outside the rainy season. The climate is tropical, with a wet season roughly from December to April and a long dry season, when the north coast around Dili becomes very dry; the south coast gets more rain. The surrounding seas belong to the Coral Triangle, an area of exceptional marine biodiversity, and the reefs around Atauro have some of the richest fish life recorded anywhere.
Fun facts
- Oecusse, on the north coast of the western half of Timor, is separated from the rest of East Timor by Indonesian territory on land.
- East Timor became independent in 2002, making it one of the youngest countries in Asia.
- The reefs around Atauro Island, north of Dili, are among the most species-rich in the world.
Flag of East Timor
The flag of East Timor is red with two overlapping triangles at the hoist side. A large yellow triangle points toward the middle of the flag, and a smaller black triangle lies on top of it. In the black triangle is a white five-pointed star, set at a slight angle.
