Flag of Afghanistan

Flag of Afghanistan

Since 2021, the flag used by the Taliban government has been a plain white field with the Shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith, written across the center in black Arabic script. The flag is twice as wide as it is tall. A similar white flag was flown when the Taliban first ruled the country in the late 1990s.

Meaning of the flag of Afghanistan

The design puts religion at the center: the Shahada is the basic statement of the Islamic faith, which nearly all Afghans share, and white is traditionally linked with purity. The black, red and green tricolor with a central emblem, used by the former Islamic Republic until 2021, is still flown by some Afghans abroad and at some diplomatic missions.
