Meaning of the flag of the Netherlands
The flag grew out of the orange, white and blue Prince's Flag of William of Orange, who led the Dutch revolt against Spain in the 16th century. During the 17th century, the orange band was gradually replaced by red, possibly because orange dye faded quickly. The colors were officially fixed by royal decree in 1937, and the flag is one of the oldest tricolors in the world.
