Geography of Morocco
Morocco covers 446,550 km² (172,414 sq mi), not counting Western Sahara. The Atlas Mountains run diagonally across the country in three main ranges: the Middle Atlas, the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas. The High Atlas holds Jbel Toubkal, at 4,167 m (13,671 ft) the highest peak in North Africa. Along the Mediterranean coast in the north rise the Rif Mountains. West of the mountains lie fertile Atlantic plains and plateaus, home to the largest cities, while the southeast opens onto the edge of the Sahara.
Most rivers rise in the Atlas: the Sebou and the Oum Er-Rbia flow to the Atlantic, the Moulouya to the Mediterranean, and the Drâa runs south toward the desert, usually drying up before it reaches the sea. Snow covers the high peaks in winter. The north and west have a Mediterranean climate, cooled on the coast by Atlantic breezes, while the south and east are hot and dry, with oases, palm groves and sand dunes such as Erg Chebbi.
