Flag of Greenland

Flag of Greenland

Greenland's flag is split horizontally into a white upper half and a red lower half. Slightly toward the pole sits a disc that is also divided in two, red on top and white below, so its colors are reversed against the background. The flag has a 2:3 ratio, and Greenlanders call it Erfalasorput, meaning our flag.

Meaning of the flag of Greenland

The white band stands for the ice sheet and the red band for the ocean, while the red half of the disc is often read as the sun sinking below the horizon and the white half as icebergs and sea ice. The design, by Greenlandic artist Thue Christiansen, uses the same red and white as the flag of Denmark and was adopted in 1985.
