Meaning of the flag of Haiti
The blue and red come from the French flag: according to tradition, revolutionary leaders tore the white stripe out of a French tricolor in 1803 to reject colonial rule. The palm and the liberty cap stand for independence and freedom. Haiti celebrates Flag Day on May 18, and the current blue and red version was restored in 1986.
