How to read this map

The Tennessee River is about 1,050 km (652 mi) long and drains a basin of about 104,000 km² (40,200 sq mi). Its average discharge is about 2,000 m³/s (70,600 cu ft/s). It rises at the French Broad River and flows into the Ohio River. Tributaries include Little Tennessee River, Clinch River, Duck River, French Broad River, Big Sandy River, Holston River, Hiwassee River and North Chickamauga Creek.

The highlighted blue line is the course of the Tennessee River as mapped by Natural Earth. Towns and cities on the map include Atlanta, Birmingham, Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, Greenville, Bartlett and Lexington. Labeled states and countries: Mississippi, Kentucky and Tennessee.

Greens show lower elevations; tan and brown show higher land, with pale tones toward the highest terrain. Shadows emphasize the slopes, and vertical relief is exaggerated so landforms are easier to read. Dashed lines show country borders, and fine dashed lines show state or province borders.

The relief uses Terrain Tiles (SRTM, GMTED2010 and ETOPO1 elevation data). Rivers, lakes, borders and the course of the Tennessee River come from Natural Earth, and the figures on this page from Wikidata. Natural Earth draws features at a small scale, so the line is a guide to where the Tennessee River is, not a surveyed boundary.
