How to read this map

The Yellowstone River is about 1,110 km (692 mi) long and drains a basin of about 181,000 km² (70,000 sq mi). Its average discharge is about 390 m³/s (13,800 cu ft/s). It flows into the Missouri River. It flows through or along North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming. Tributaries include Bighorn River, Tongue River, Powder River, Boulder River, Clarks Fork Yellowstone River, DePuy Spring Creek, Gardner River and Lamar River.

The highlighted blue line is the course of the Yellowstone River as mapped by Natural Earth. Towns and cities on the map include Billings, Idaho Falls, Rapid City and Great Falls. Labeled states and countries: Montana.

Greens show lower elevations; tan and brown show higher land, with pale tones toward the highest terrain. Shadows emphasize the slopes, and vertical relief is exaggerated so landforms are easier to read. Dashed lines show country borders, and fine dashed lines show state or province borders.

The relief uses Terrain Tiles (SRTM, GMTED2010 and ETOPO1 elevation data). Rivers, lakes, borders and the course of the Yellowstone River come from Natural Earth, and the figures on this page from Wikidata. Natural Earth draws features at a small scale, so the line is a guide to where the Yellowstone River is, not a surveyed boundary.
