Geography of Montenegro
Montenegro covers 13,883 km² (5,360 sq mi) and is very mountainous. Behind a narrow coastal strip, the limestone Dinaric Alps rise steeply, forming a rocky karst landscape of bare plateaus, sinkholes and caves. In the north, high ranges such as Durmitor and Bjelasica hold glacial lakes and dark forests. The highest point, Zla Kolata, reaches 2,534 m (8,314 ft) in the Prokletije range on the border with Albania. Between the mountains lies the Zeta plain around Podgorica, the country's main lowland.
The Bay of Kotor cuts deep into the mountains and looks like a fjord, although it is actually a drowned river canyon. In the north, the Tara River has carved one of the deepest canyons in Europe, and the Piva and Morača also flow through gorges. In the south, Lake Skadar, shared with Albania, is the largest lake in the Balkans. The coast has a Mediterranean climate with hot summers, while the northern highlands have cold, snowy winters.
Fun facts
- Montenegro uses the euro even though it is not a member of the European Union.
- Durmitor National Park, which includes the Tara River Canyon, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- The name Montenegro means "Black Mountain", a reference to the dark forests of Mount Lovćen.
Flag of Montenegro
The flag of Montenegro is red with a gold border around all four edges. In the center is the national coat of arms: a gold double-headed eagle with a crown above it, holding a scepter and an orb. On its chest is a shield showing a gold lion walking across green ground in front of a blue sky. The flag has a 1:2 ratio.
