Geography of Mozambique
Mozambique covers 801,590 km² (309,496 sq mi). Nearly half the country is a low coastal plain, widest in the south, that rises inland to plateaus and highlands along the western borders. The north has rolling plateaus dotted with granite domes called inselbergs, and the Niassa highlands lie near Lake Malawi. The highest point, Monte Binga, reaches 2,436 m (7,992 ft) in the Chimanimani Mountains on the border with Zimbabwe.
Many large rivers cross Mozambique on their way to the Indian Ocean. The Zambezi, the biggest, flows through the center, where the Cahora Bassa Dam holds back a large reservoir, before reaching the sea through a wide delta. The Limpopo crosses the south, and the Rovuma forms the border with Tanzania. The coast has mangroves, coral reefs and island groups such as the Bazaruto and Quirimbas archipelagos. The climate is tropical, with a rainy season from about November to March and frequent cyclones on the coast.
Fun facts
- The Island of Mozambique, a small coral island off the northern coast, was an early Portuguese trading post, gave the country its name and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Cahora Bassa on the Zambezi is one of the largest hydroelectric dams in Africa.
- Mozambique has one of the longest coastlines in Africa, facing the Indian Ocean for most of its length.
Flag of Mozambique

The flag has a 2:3 ratio.
